This check establishes if an individual has a police record.

What does it check?

This check establishes if an individual has a police record.

This check provides what is referred to as a Police Record Certificate or Certificado de Antecedentes Policiales. This check establishes if an individual has been investigated for crimes, misdemeanours or other administrative offences by the police forces in Spain and subsequently been referred to the Judicial or Administrative Authorities. Not all such investigations end up with convictions and some individuals may have an arrest warrant against them. There are two main police forces in Spain and both are approached with this check and a certificate of record is requested from each separately: Policía Nacional, also described as Ministerio del Interior or Interior Ministry. It has a civilian status and deals with criminal offences and public order in big towns and cities; and Guardia Civil, also described as Ministerio de Defensa or Defence Ministry. It has a military status and patrols rural areas (including highways and ports) and investigates crimes there. This check is supplementary to the criminal record check, which only reports on cases which ended with a judgement against the individual and therefore a conviction.
