Unlicensed pilot quits over forged docs scandal

BBC news reports that a South African Airways (SAA) pilot has resigned after 20 years of flying without a proper licence.  The pilot, William Chandler, only had a commercial pilot's licence rather than the required Transport Pilot's Licence (ATPL).

It is alleged that Mr Chandler forged documents to give the impression that he held the ATPL even refusing the offer of promotion to captain, knowing that he would have to resubmit his ATPL.

SAA claim that safety was never a concern, as Mr Chandler did hold both a flyng linece and completed the required safety training, although they have filed criminal charges against him.

SAA are now submitting all of the licences of their pilots for evaluation.
