Proposed amendments to New Zealand privacy law

The New Zealand Privacy Commissioner, John Edwards, recently released a report reviewing the Privacy Act 1993.

The report recommends amendments to the Act as part of the overhaul of New Zealand privacy law that was announced by the Ministry of Justice in 2014. The Commissioner's recommendations focus on strengthening enforcement powers and aligning laws internationally, including GDPR that comes into effect in May 2018.

The recommendations include a right to personal information portability, controls on re-identification, a new power to require demonstrations of agency compliance, a new civil penalty provision, adjustments to criminal offenses, and public register reform.
